the Huber Opera House
Opened in 1882 as Mackey's Brick Hotel,
the Huber was enlarged and converted into an opera house in 1895 by local contractors
Clemmer and Johnson. The Huber was used for many years as a try-out theater for
professional productions from New York & Chicago.
The Opera House has hosted countless local and professional acts
and speakers. Among them noted speaker William Jennings Bryan and local resident Amelia
Bingham who went on to a successful New York stage career performed for Hicksville
residents. In the past couple of decades, featured acts such as Ricky
Nelson (remember "Garden
Party"?), Chubby Checker, Three Dog
Night and Huey Lewis performed on the stage. Others including
Hart's Bands
took advantage of the theater's perfect acoustics in the early days.
From the 1930's until in the 1970's, the Huber became a movie theater. Now the Huber is in danger of being destroyed. We can't let that happen!!
The community of Hicksville has been presented with the opportunity to decide the fate of the Huber Opera Block. The Huber has a rich history as a center of community activity. This building could be, and should be, the centerpiece for a revitalized downtown. Restored and properly utilized, the Huber would give us all even more reason to patronize local businesses and enjoy our community.
The Huber Opera House and Civic Center, Inc., recently organized, has received its tax-free 501C3 status, thus contributions from donors are tax deductible.
According to Poggemeyer Design Group, the Huber is still structurally sound and has much to offer the village of Hicksville. Much has been made of the substantial cost of restoration. however, restoration done in phases spreads the expense over a number of years and proves to be less costly than new building construction.
While financial grants are a possibility, this is essentially a local project. It will require financial support as well as commitments of time, energy, and "elbow grease" from the members of our community. With this in mind, we bring this exciting opportunity to your attention and ask for your help. We need the assurance of community support. How Can You Help????
Our Opera House, with its rich history, stands as a once proud reminder of the significant role Hicksville played in the furthering of the arts at the turn of the century. What better way to celebrate the present and the coming of the new millennium then by preserving this grand structure? The residents of Hicksville deserve this type of investment in their future. In short, the Huber is too valuable to lose!
